The soft color is unusually easy to place, goes with almost anything, and appears as a haze rather than a block. It blooms for a long stretch, feeding small native bees and butterflies from midsummer well into fall. Coreopsis also supports twenty-three specialist bee species across the western US, bees whose young depend on this pollen alone.

Growing Notes

Full sun and well-drained ground; it tolerates lean soil and does not need feeding. Space about 18 inches apart. It is slower to emerge in spring than most perennials, so give it time. Good drought tolerance once established, though it flowers longer with occasional deep watering in the hottest weeks.

Maintenance

Shear the whole plant back by a third after the first flush fades, and it will rebloom in the fall. Leave the growth standing through winter, then cut it back in late spring, leaving about a third for insects. It spreads slowly by rhizome into a wider clump; divide every three or four years in spring if you want to keep it in bounds or make more.
